After London and a bit of a tour up the UK through York and to Scotland, we were then off to Belgium and down to Paris to catch the Eurostar back to London. We went to Belgium specifically because it was 100 years to the day that my great granddad on my Dad’s side was in the trenches in Belgium. We actually went and visited a lot of the places he actually was 100 years ago, it was quite surreal.

I did make it my mission to try as much Belgium chocolate as possible on our quick day in Brussels. I looked up the most recommended places quickly while we were at the airport in Edinburgh and I managed to get one or two at almost every place I wanted to find!

Me and Dad did the Atomium and it was really fun, super kitsch and interesting.

This bistro near our AirBnB was AMAZING. Typical tourists we couldn’t read the menu because it was written on a chalkboard and not in english, but the waiter was so friendly and brought the blackboard out to us and explained what every item was! I don’t think I got any photos of the actual food (though the bread was sooo good) but it was all excellent and it was such a nice meal.

We had breakfast in Bruges before doing a lot of driving around through Belgium. We visited Ypres for the Museum and  our final destination was Armentières where my great-granddad started his journey. We also visited Waterloo the next day.

Dad, with the help of a researcher pinpointed the exact place where my great-granddad served and there’s now a park there, but there’s still a few trenches preserved. It was very surreal to be able to stand in them.

We took the train to Paris next and had a nice night in a nice hotel after dinner at a french bistro.

We wandered around Paris leisurely before we had a special lunch Dad had booked us at Georges in the Pompidiou centre. After a lot of nice champagne we continued to wander around Paris even more leisurely before our train back to London!

Mum and Dad had a few more days left in London before they went back to NZ though Stuart and Erica left the next morning. We had one last great meal at Barbecoa which was really good.
